A silicone or gel liner is worn directly next to the skin, using friction between with residual limb and the liner to suspend the limb. To connect the liner to the socket of the prosthesis a locking mechanism is used (pin and lock or lanyard).
If the volume of your residual limb is moderately stable and you have good hand dexterity (the liner can be tricky to put on due to the high friction) you may be suitable for a gel or silicone liner. Our experienced prosthetists will be able to further advise your suitability following an assessment.
Silicone and gel liners provide a good level of suspension, the also help to absorb any rotational forces which the residual limb may experience. They are therefore suitable for all users with activity levels up to jogging and recreational sports (running and high impact will require further increased suspension).
Gel and silicone liners are used with a specialist type of socket which does not rely upon the bony anatomy of your residual limb. This shaping allows your knee to be unrestricted in its movement and limits additional pressure.
Silicone and gel liners have many advantages over other suspension methods, they offer good suspension levels which helps to decrease the likelihood of pistoning occuring. Due to the close fitting nature of the liner the movement at the knee is not restricted making them suitable for active amputees. Although the liner is worn next to the skin small volume fluctuations can be accommodated through the use of liner socks.
