Suction suspension for transfemoral amputees is suitable for those with a relatively long unscarred residual limb with stable volume. This is due to the requirement for accurate total surface contact to occur. Suction suspension does not require any additional devices, liners or socks to be worn which can aid to a more lightweight design.
In order to create the suspension the user will use a pull sock to draw their residual limb into the socket, the pull sock is removed through the valve hole. Once the limb is fully into the socket and the pull sock is removed the valve is inserted and the remaining air is expelled. The negative pressure creates excellent suspension helping to improve proprioception and control over the prosthesis.
