There are many different options for ankle prosthesis components including mechanical and microprocessor devices.
Mechanical ankles allow for the user to adjust heel height to enable a variety of shoes to be worn or to be able to walk barefooted. Adaptors can also be added to aid with absorbing shock or torque.
Microprocessor ankles adapt as you walk, they will adjust to different walking speeds, terrains, heel heights and slope angles. This enables the user to have increased stability as well as a more natural walking pattern. The adaptability of microprocessor ankles also results in less stress being placed upon the body and in particular the sound limb of unilateral amputees.
